Nameserver lookup or DNS Lookup is an efficient tool for obtaining name server details of any domain name. These are basically the DNS records form that identifies which DNS server is established for a domain. These records contain the IP address of that domain and other relevant information.

Name server lookup can be performed for different reasons. The main one is to identify which nameserver or ISP is authoritative for a domain. This happens when the requested names resolves to the IP address of that ISP only. Another important reason for performing name search is to check the availability of a domain name or to check the availability of certain extensions. Name lookup also helps to determine which nameservers or ISPs are authoritative for a domain or to check which are authoritative for a particular extension. This way it helps to determine the right nameserver or ISP for a given domain or extension.

In earlier days before the availability of DNS services, people had to rely on directory assistance provided by some paid service providers. They used to manually input the domain name in the nameserver lists of different domain registrars. For this purpose they used to visit each of the domain registrars, check which ones have the relevant names in their records, input the domain names and then check whether these namesersvers or ISPs are authoritative for a given domain or extension. They would then go ahead and register the domain name with those entities. There are some drawbacks of this approach. Name checking requires more time and the domain name might end up in the hands of some non-appropriate nameservers which can result in severe problems.

There are new techniques which make it possible to perform the above task in a faster and more convenient manner. For instance there is the latest technology called Domain Searching or DNS. The DNS is an exhaustive database that contains almost all the details regarding any domain name registered in the country. Basically DNS provides you with the names of all the IP addresses which are associated with any domain name and also provides information about the physical addresses of various IP addresses. There is even additional information provided by DNS which includes various types of addresses and their zone transfers.

As far as the functionality of DNS is concerned, it basically makes use of query/response method to provide its services. One can search for names in DNS via the query or response headers of the DNS request. Similarly one can search for names in DNS via the NS records of the domain name or via the TXT DNS lookup records.

When you need to find out details about an IP address, you can simply use the TXT ( Transaction Data) of the domain name or the TXT record to perform the same purpose. The advantage of this approach over the DNS lookup technique is that it is easier and faster. If you want to find out names from domain names, you can simply enter the IP address into the nameservers of different search servers. If the server returns the results, then you have the full name of the domain name owner. You can carry on with this procedure till you come across the desired nameserver.

Similarly, if you want to find out names from domain names, you can use the secondary nameserver to search for the desired names. The primary nameserver is an authoritative nameserver which maintains the zone files in addition to the DNS set up. Once you insert the domain name in the TXT record of the secondary nameservers, you will get the details of the domain name, its physical address and also its nameserver. If you want to carry on with the same process till you come across the desired names, you can check the names of the domain names against the addresses of the primary nameserver.

In case of reverse look up, you may find that many domain names are similar to yours or may be even identical. For such cases, it is better to make use of the wildcard feature of the DNS server. Enter an alternative IP address in front of the domain name which will disallow any other attempts of the domain name to be accessed. After getting the results of your query, you can make use of the DNS tools to check the DNS zone file and check whether the server shows the entry for such IP address or not. In case, you get the positive response from the DNS server, you can conclude that the domain name is registered and thus you can go ahead to register your own domain name.
